Amazing for sweet itch

BEST EVER!!! I don’t think I’ve ever written an Amazon review but this deserves one. My Mustang has really bad Sweet itch. She gets dexamethasone from vet, Zyrtec am/pm, sweet itch blanket am/pm. Destin diaper rash cream for wounds and heavily sprayed with fly spray and SWAT salve. Even still the bugs bite her belly. I have been using this belly gaurd in combo with everything else and it’s made a HUGE difference. It’s allowed her udder/ belly regions to heal. I got her a size large. She wears a size 81 in blankets. It came with everything I needed, including the back strap to connect front and hind straps. It’s a little confusing putting it on the first time but after that it’s easy on/off if your horse stands still.

Great purchase

Worked perfectly. My guy had a summer sore on his nethers. It was mild, then bad, then spreading. I got this not thinking it would do all that much. But it has been GREAT at keeping flies off. I purchased in June of 2026, and the item came with a Velcro strap that kept the withers section connected to the hind section. So I didn’t have to purchase anything else, as other people mentioned. This stayed on perfectly. He rolled and it stayed on. It was on overnight and no issue at all. I bought two so I could wash one and keep one on at all times. It is a bit cumbersome to put on, but my guy is old (24) and pretty chill. He didn’t care much about getting strapped in or having the straps dangling between his feet or tail as I strapped it together. I closely looked over his body each day to make sure he wasn’t getting hot spots from the straps rubbing him. Nonissue there. Even with the straps going right up his back side. And I’m in South Florida in summer heat and humidity. I highly highly recommend if you have a horse with belly or sheath sores. This product is great.

Cashel fixed this fly sheet belly guard's design!

UPDATE 8/12/2026 - I read Sunny's review and clearly Cashel had redesigned this fly sheet because so many of us complained about the fit.. I ordered a new M one direct from Cashel to make sure I got the redesigned item. This redesign works well but with a little change, it is now PERFECT on my horse. 3 nights and not even small slippage. Their new design comes with a long spinal backstrap that ties the withers and croup sections together. Their instructions have you cross the front straps over the withers, velcroing each strap to the opposite side. The hind straps come with 2 cross-straps to keep them together. Although the instructions have you keeping the hind straps on their own sides, i found i got a better fit by crossing the hind straps to the opposite sides, just like the front straps. I then attached the single long spinal back strap under the crossed front straps, and then under the crossed backstraps, including the first cross-strap, to keep it in place. I then shortened the spinal back strap by about half by attaching the rear end's velcro to the front. If your horse needs more adjustment, try the VELCRO straps I suggest in my original review. Those are infinitely adjustable. It is now much quicker and easier to put on, and is incredibly effective. Cannot recommend it more. Kudos to Cashel for listening to their customers! Original Review: I read the reviews and took Vicki Nichols' advice. I have a 16H Andalusian and got a S, which he kept getting out of or ripping. We had to take it off at night because of that - rolling in the bedding. Yesterday, I took Vicki's advice and fixed it up as she showed in photos and specified in her review. Worked great today in turnout! He gets bad summer sores and without this slinky, the flies eat him up. Thank you, Vicki! One piece of info - we do have Lowe's here but they didn't have the correct Velcro product. Amazon does! VELCRO Brand 30 Inch Elastic Straps 4 Pack | Stretchable and Adjustable For Snug Fit | Fasten Outdoor Umbrellas, Wood, Tarps, Blankets, Poles, More | Cinch with Buckle, Black 30x1" If your horse is bigger, you'll need longer straps. Also, because he'd ripped one slinky beyond repair, i kept it for spare parts. So in this adjustment, I could keep the two crosswise straps on the croup end, and use one crosswise from the ripped slinky to keep the fore straps together. Look at Vicki's great photos - you'll see what i mean. We're going to try leaving it on him overnight and I'm crossing my fingers. Addition: It stayed on overnight! Cashel, you need to correct the design and add one or two straps to link the front and rear straps, and another crosswise piece to attach those straps to the front straps, as you can see in Vicki's first photo. UPDATE: When my horse dropped to pee, the pee pocket was too short. He measures 75", so right in-between S and M. I bought a M, and the pee pocket is much bigger, roomier and way easier and more comfortable for him to pee. Using Vicki's advice, it still stays on him even though it looks too loose. I added one more improvement, which is another short x-wise strap (from the spare parts slinky) holding the two rear long straps together, so there are 3 altogether there now, spaced out as needed. His summer sores are almost all healed now, w/o flies being able to get on him as we can now leave the belly guard on almost 24/7, just taking it off to soak and wash the pee pocket daily. It now works brilliantly! See new photos of him in M.

Works great

Grateful for this belly sheet as my horse had surgery to remove a melanoma in his urethra. We’re in CA and have horrendous flies in the summer. This works amazingly well keeping them off his sheath. I had to make a couple additional straps to help secure it as it would buldge on the sides or slip down his back legs which is very dangerous. I took pictures for others to try. I used velcro I got off Amazon to help secure it in place. I have a Lusitano who can be very reactive and this works great for him.

Really good so far

Think I put the straps on wrong but it’s staying on and doing really well.. I got size large for my 15.3 appy , so far so good! He was getting bitten up by bugs so this is really helping him stay comfortable during the bug months in CA

Horse Fly Sheet Belly Guard

I really liked the concept. The straps need a better design. My horse broke one the first night. Ended up being a waste of $50.

Not perfect, but with modifications has saved my horse!

Yes, the design on this thing leaves something to be desired but I haven't been able to find anything better and my boy HAD to have his sheath covered this summer - he has a summer sore on the end of his urethra. Thanks to the other reviewers on here, I knew to add extra velcro straps and he's been wearing it for about the last 10 days. It's not a perfect solution but it's saved him, he is so much more comfortable and is healing up. I will say that the fabric is really good. It's breathable and pee-through-able and seems pretty tough. It doesn't seem like it will tear anytime soon. I think the stretchy straps will wear out before the fabric of the belly cover will. I just bought a second one and my horse is tolerating his "thong underwear" remarkably well. Here is the link to the extra velcro straps. They're great! https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09QSY9B7J?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_1&th=1

Poor quality

Very poorly made. Won't stay on even with extra added straps. Rips extremely easy. Get brand name if you want to try. Holds up better but still needs extra straps to stay on.

Good for bugs

Perfect for my guy that gets a bug belly. Had to add a strap to the chest area to keep it from slipping off his shoulders.

DOESNT WORK FOR HORSES IN PASTURE

Do NOT recommend for horses in pasture. I tried this on three different geldings and within hours it had fallen down their booty and gotten tangled in their hind legs. I’m not usually big on writing bad reviews but this product really didn’t work but of course was damaged beyond being able to return it right out of the gate. I wish I had a better option for tummy protection.

Very helpful for keeping flies off those summer sores

Nice lightweight and cool cover to prevent flies and help heal summer sores. Straps stretch out after a season though.

works remarkably well!!

Highly recommend! Works perfectly for my horse who had a serious wound on his sheath. I desperately needed to keep flies off & this is very effective. Would work well for insect dermatitis on the midline as well. Horse can drop, so he wears it 24/7. Easy to clean. I bought a couple so I could rotate & disinfect. I am grateful to have found this product!! Truly solves a real problem! (sorry, but I'm not posting a photo of this lol)

Does not work. Don't bother.

Did not fit with size guide. Would not stay in place. Tangled horses legs and didn't cover intended area in a way that would keep bugs out. Returned immediately.

Don’t waste your money

This thing is a pain to put on and doesn’t stay on and the fact that it covers his whole sheath with no opening is disgusting.

Comes off easily. Won't stay on.

Took forever to figure out how to put on. Finally got on stayed on during day and by morning. Found it put it back on and back off next morning. I gave up.

Not worth the money.

Fell off my mare immediately and I followed the directions. Doesn’t work. Don’t buy.

Works great

I have a horse that flies love, and summer sores are a constant battle. This works great, however having help to put it on makes it much easier. However the strap fits the tail could use a redesign, but it works great while it's on. I found if I put a fly sheet on, it's protected and stays on better.

The straps

So this product was decent and a great idea, but I couldn’t keep it on him. The straps kept falling down. The straps ended up getting so loose. He ended up stepping on it and ripping it within a matter of days.

Not durable

I was hopeful that this product would help with my gelding sweet itch. It fit him well and seemed like it would work. However, it didn't even last 24 hours before I found it torn and hanging around his legs. Decent design but materials are weak.

Very effective - extremely tricky to put on and off

Very effective against sweet itch along ridge of belly. Tried everything there is for about a year, this solved the issue (along with other treatments to heal skin). However, due to where the velcro closures are located it is very tricky to put on and take off as this is not placed over the back - yes, you can attach the torso part first, on the back, pull around, and then do the front piece, however, if the horse moves, there is a high risk of the horse stepping on it and breaking it. It sounds like a silly problem, it gets very annoying and time-consuming. I put on multiple horse blankets several time every day so I'm familiar with many different forms of blankets - this is great, but not its fasteners. Looking elsewhere or making my own. However: Fret not, this is very effective for helping a horse suffering from sweet itch, phew.

Good idea, but poor design.

Good idea, but poor design. I ended up using a long piece of elastic to tie the front straps and the "H"( cross piece holding the back straps together). That helps to keep it on. I also have it under my horse's sweet itch sheet, to cover areas the sheet doesn't protect.

Did not stay on

It worked ok for a few days then failed. Went upside down and I had to adjust the fit with velcro. It tore and is now trash.

Hard to put on and it doesn’t fit well.
